Although I have been seriously drawing and painting since I was eleven years old and working professionally
for over thirty years I have never truly developed a definitive style. I like to experiment too much, to
ever be satisfied with following the same path for any length of time. I am always curious to see what is
possible if I do this or do that. I always want to see what is round the next corner. Nature is also a
constant source of inspiration, especially in my more abstract work.
My latest experiments are centred on the paints I use. Study of the history of pigments has given me a fascination
for making my own paint from raw pigment which gives me control over the consistency and allows me to experiment
with subtle textural differences.
In my representational work it is light that captures my imagination. As my career has progressed I have become
aware of what the impressionists were seeing when they studied landscapes, but rather than use the impressionist
style I prefer to describe the effects of light in a more photorealistic way.
My favourite subject when I was young was wild life and recently I have returned to the idea of expressing my love
of ornithology in the form of drawing and painting. I feel that the past few years of experimentation have added a
new dimension to my vision of birds and animals and as a consequence my work has more artistry. I see my career as
an ever evolving journey of discovery and I truly hope I never reach the point where I am satisfied.
